Chapter 9 – Andi

Andi had never spent the night with a stranger in her bed… at least, not quite as intimately as the night she spent with Ellis. Sure, she’d done her fair share of camping, trekking out into the desert with tents and supplies to spend the night under the stars, and often shared a tent with a friend (or more often, her father, who was usually the mastermind of these camping trips.) But even sleeping in separate sleeping bags on opposite sides of the tent had always felt oddly… well, cramped. As though the other person was invading her space somehow, even if it was a close friend or family member, someone she loved. So why did it feel so comfortable to lie here in her tiny single bed with Ellis’s long limbs wrapped around her tightly? Shouldn’t she have felt unbelievably suffocated and cramped?

And yet, the sleep she had (when they finally did get to sleep) was one of the most restful and restorative she could remember. Not a single dream interrupted her rest—she became only vaguely aware that she was conscious when Ellis’s alarm went off in the morning, gently rousing both of them, and when he slid out of the bed and started quietly getting ready, she realized that her narrow single bed felt far too large and empty for her liking. Strange, that. She’d had her problems with the lumpy mattress before—but it had definitely never felt too big.

Ellis stooped to kiss her on the forehead before slipping out of the door, and she turned over with a sigh, settling back into the rumpled bedsheets that still smelled of him. Was it cologne that made him smell so good, or was it just his natural smell? Either way, she let herself enjoy it for a little while, eyes sagging as she drifted back into a pleasant half-sleep for half an hour or so… but before too long, she became aware of the sounds of the commune around her as the morning wore on. She could just about tell what time it was from what kinds of sounds she could hear through her door, and sure enough, when she finally sat up in bed with a yawn, it was just after ten.

The day before, she’d spent stressing—stressing about Ellis, about her family, about her work, about money… and though realistically not much had changed since then, she was shocked by how transformed her mind felt. She turned over the subjects she’d been worrying about in her mind, looking for the stress that she’d been so gripped by… and found, to her shock, that it was completely gone. Work? It would pick up. She’d find her audience. Money? The commune was doing just fine. She’d pay what she owed when she could—that was the whole point of Niamh’s ridiculous system. Her family? Oddly enough, talking to Ellis about being adopted had made her feel… well, a lot less conflicted, somehow. And as for Ellis…

Her eyes fell on the deck of cards that were still sitting on her side table, and she reached out to draw one.
